Understanding International

What is Understanding International?

Understanding International is an online self-study package to help staff learn about key aspects of international work in the education sector. Its aims are:

  • to help new staff with an international role get up and running quickly
  • to provide new advisers with an introduction to the immigration rules before attending other UKCISA immigration training
  • to support staff who have moved roles or have new responsibilities to explore new topics and gain confidence quickly 
  • to provide experienced staff with tools to support more sophisticated management decision-making
  • to give non-specialist staff an insight into key issues relating to international students and internationalisation
  • to provide a development tool for groups of staff to use together as a prompt for benchmarking and improving current practice, pooling ideas and developing shared solutions to commonly-faced issues.

Below is a presentation from the recent UKCISA Conference 2015 that gives a brief outline of what Understanding International is and some ideas on how to use it.

Who is it for?

The tool can be used by anyone working with international students or engaged in other international activity in a college or university.  It is aimed at you if you are working in any part of the education sector, with an international component or specialism in your role including:

  • recruiting, supporting and advising international students
  • supporting outward student mobility
  • managing international partnerships
  • transnational education
  • staff mobility

If you don't have a specifically international component to your role, you should still find some modules of interest for an introduction to issues such as internationalisation or cultural awareness.

  • each module can be covered in just a couple of hours, or learners can engage more deeply with activities and resources for additional value
